How does upgrading work? Will I be charged twice?

Written by Debra

Thinking about upgrading to a Family Plan? Great choice 🙌
Here’s what to expect, and why you won’t end up paying twice.

How do I upgrade to a Family Plan?

You can upgrade directly in the Simply Piano or Simply Guitar app:

  1. Go to Menu > Get Family Plan

  2. Follow the steps to upgrade

  3. Confirm your purchase

That’s it! Once you’re done, you’ll unlock 5 premium profiles with full access across our apps 🎉

💡 Upgrading is currently only supported if you originally subscribed through the app. If you subscribed through our website, just reach out to support - we’ll help you switch over smoothly.

What happens when I upgrade?

This depends a little on how you originally subscribed, but don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple:

In all cases

  1. Your Family Plan starts right away (or after your trial ends)

  2. Your progress stays exactly the same

  3. You’ll only pay for the upgrade, not double

What you might see on your bill

Depending on your payment method, one of the following will happen:

Option 1: Charged + refunded (most common on iOS & some payments)

  • You’re charged in full for the new Family Plan

  • You get a refund for any unused time on your current plan
(for example, if you had 10 months left, you’ll get back the value of those 10 months)

Option 2: Small prorated charge (common on Android)

  • You’re only charged the difference in price for the remaining time
(for example, you’ll just pay the extra cost of upgrading for the time you had left)

  • Your billing cycle stays the same

👉 Either way, it balances out - you’re not paying twice.

💡 On a free trial?

  • Your trial will continue as normal

  • Your Family Plan will start (and be charged) when the trial ends

FAQs

Will I lose my progress?

Not at all. Your progress is linked to your account, so it will stay exactly as it is.

How do I avoid being charged twice?

Always upgrade through the app (Menu > Get Family Plan).

If you cancel and then buy a new plan separately, there can be overlap, so it’s best to follow the in-app flow.

Why does my charge look different than expected?

You might notice a different amount than expected for a couple of reasons:

  • You may see a full charge + refund or a smaller prorated charge, depending on your payment provider

  • The total can also vary slightly due to taxes or app store fees

You can always check the full breakdown in your App Store or Google Play account, or reach out to us if you paid with a card or via PayPal 👍

When will I be charged again?

  • Some plans keep the same billing date

  • Others start a new billing cycle from the upgrade date

You can always check your next billing date in your app store account.

Where can I check my charges or refund?

Just head to your App Store / Google Play purchase history - everything will be listed there.

If you paid with a card or via PayPal, reach out to us, and we can check for you 🙌
